A crown, also known as a cap, is a covering that envelops the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size. This restoration method is essential for protecting and strengthening tooth structure that cannot be effectively restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

While there are several types of crowns available, porcelain crowns, also referred to as tooth-colored crowns, are the most popular choice. This is because they closely resemble natural teeth in appearance. Porcelain crowns are highly durable and can last for many years. However, like most dental restorations, they may eventually require replacement. Porcelain crowns are meticulously crafted to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth, resulting in a seamless, long-lasting, and beautiful smile.

Reasons for crowns:

  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.
  • Tooth has a root canal.

What does getting a crown involve?

Porcelain Crowns (Caps)

A crown procedure typically involves two appointments. During your first appointment, precise molds (or impressions) of your tooth will be taken to create a custom crown. Additionally, a temporary crown will be fabricated and placed on your tooth to protect it until your permanent crown is ready, which usually takes about two weeks from a dental laboratory.

While your tooth is numb, your dentist will prepare it by removing any decay and shaping the surface to accommodate the crown. Once this preparation is complete, your temporary crown will be securely placed with temporary cement, and your bite will be checked to ensure proper alignment.

At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed, and the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned. Your new crown will then be meticulously placed to ensure accurate spacing and bite alignment.

Following the procedure, you will receive care instructions, and it is recommended to attend regular dental check-ups to monitor the condition of your new crown.
