Composite Fillings

Ready for a Healthy Smile? Contact Us Today!

A composite (tooth-colored) filling is utilized to repair a tooth affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth is removed, and then the cavity is filled with a composite filling.

Various types of filling materials are available, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth. Composite fillings, along with silver amalgam fillings, are among the most commonly used today. Composite fillings, being tooth-colored, can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth, making them aesthetically suitable for use in front teeth or more visible areas.

Like most dental restorations, composite fillings are not permanent and may need to be replaced someday. However, they are highly durable and can last many years, providing you with a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

Reasons for composite fillings:

  • Chipped teeth.
  • Closing space between two teeth.
  • Cracked or broken teeth.

  • Decayed teeth.
  • Worn teeth.

How are composite fillings placed?

composite fillings

Composite fillings are typically placed in a single appointment. While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove any decay as needed. The area will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new filling is inserted. If the decay was close to the nerve of the tooth, a special medication may be applied for added protection. The composite filling will then be precisely placed, shaped, and polished to restore your tooth to its original shape and function.

It’s normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures when composite fillings are first placed, but this should subside shortly after your tooth adjusts to the new filling.
